Aurora: Dancing lights in the night sky
Dancing in the night sky
The Aurora borealis pictured over Kvaloeya island, Tromsoe, Norway. In some areas, such as Alaska or Greenland, they may be visible most nights of the year. Like a neon sign, auroral light is produced by a high-vacuum electrical discharge. It is powered by interactions between the Sun and earth. The light is the glow from atoms and molecules in the earth's upper atmosphere.
