MSN's 8 green cities of India
This largest city of central India, famous for its oranges, is considered to be the second greenest city in the country. Blessed with rich forest resources, Nagpur is noted for its rich forest resources, lush vegetation and greenery. The forests around Nagpur are full of best quality teak plantations.
The Nagpur division of social forestry department has been on an overdrive in reforesting and greening barren areas around the city. For instance, the hillock surrounding the famous Lord Ganesh temple at Adasa, 42 kms from Nagpur, looked nothing less than an archetype archaeology or a quarrying site with red stones all around till about two years back. Today, it's turning into an oasis with lush green plants.
However, the tempo of tree plantation and maintaining the greenery has been on a decline lately. The speed with which roadside trees are dying in the city, conservationists give 20-25 years for most of the city's green cover to disappear. In the past few months, over 50 trees have crashed, most of them due to concretization and tarring.
